Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic announced on Wednesday that she has undergone shoulder surgery. Last week, she withdrew from the U.S. Open, which will begin on August 26, due to injury.

"I've been struggling with shoulder pain for a few months now, and there was no other option but to go for surgery," Vondrousova wrote in her post. "Everything went well and I'll start rehab soon. See you back on the court happy and healthy."

Vondrousova defeated Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the women's singles final at the Wimbledon Championships in 2023 to win her first Grand Slam title. But she lost to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain in the first round at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club this year, becoming the first defending champion eliminated so early from the tournament since 1994.

Vondrousova clinched the women's singles tennis silver medal at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but withdrew from this year's Paris Summer Games due to injury. She is currently ranked 22nd in the world after playing 27 singles matches in 2024 with 16 wins and 11 defeats.
