"Taiwan independence" and cross-Straits peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, told a press conference on Friday.

Zhu made the comments in response to a media inquiry concerning remarks made by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te at an event in Kinmen on August 23, hyping up the so-called "China threat."

Noting that Lai's stubborn stance on the separatist position of "Taiwan independence" is the greatest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, Zhu said that compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits must unite and take action to resolutely oppose the provocative and dangerous acts of Lai's administration regarding "Taiwan independence", and bring peace across the Taiwan Straits and return stability to the people.
