Four people, including a police officer, were injured following a car crash and suspected stabbing in Sydney's south in Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state on Sunday.

NSW police said emergency services were responding to a two-vehicle crash incident in Engadine, a suburb in southern Sydney.

Officers arrived to find a man, who appeared to have stab wounds, allegedly running from the crash scene. The man was taken into custody with the deployment of a Taser, police said.

A male police officer suffered a serious laceration to his left wrist, believed to have been incurred during the arrest. A woman believed to be a passenger in the crashed vehicle was found suffering from multiple wounds, police said.

A fourth injured person was also found, but police said the person's involvement in this incident remains unclear. 

Sydney has seen a spate of knife attacks this year, prompting the NSW state government to toughen its knife laws. 

The state parliament passed laws in June, giving police electronic metal-detecting scanners to check people without a warrant at shopping centers, sporting venues and public transport stations.

In April, six people were killed and 12 injured in a knife attack at a mall in Sydney's Bondi area.
