In the Zhanggong District of Ganzhou, east China's Jiangxi Province, Hakka artisans breathe life into bamboo stalks and tree roots, transforming them into intricate works of art. Hakka bamboo carving involves etching detailed patterns and characters into bamboo items or sculpting bamboo roots into decorative pieces. These carvings are known for their dense, elaborate designs that showcase a unique artistic flair, while maintaining practicality.
Hakka wood carving is categorized into three major types: three-dimensional conical carving, root carving, and relief carving. Root carving, in particular, utilizes the natural forms of tree roots to create art. The chosen woods, such as camphor, sandalwood, ginkgo, rosewood, and others, are selected for their fine texture, durability, and resistance to deformation, ensuring that each piece is both beautiful and enduring.
