Manchester United of the Premier League agreed to acquire Manuel Ugarte from Ligue 1's Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for 42 million pounds (about $55.7 million) including eight million pounds (about $10.6 million) in add-ons, ESPN reported on Tuesday.
The transaction will be formally completed when Ugarte passes a medical examination. The 23-year-old Uruguayan midfielder may be able to make his debut for the Red Devils against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Ugarte made 37 appearances for PSG last season and tallied three assists after the French powerhouse paid 50 million euros (about $55.9 million) to land him from Sporting CP. Nonetheless, he did not play in the club's first two Ligue 1 games of the 2024-25 campaign.
According to ESPN, Ugarte made it clear to PSG that he wanted to leave.
The 2024-25 summer transfer window will end on Friday. Signing Ugarte will take United's spending to more than 180 million pounds (about $238.5 million). In order to fund the deal, the club agreed to send Scott McTominay to Italian Serie A club Napoli for 25 million pounds (about $33.1 million).
United have been also negotiating with Chelsea over a possible swap of Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling, per ESPN. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca reportedly told Sterling last week that he is surplus to requirements.
Sancho lost his spot at United under manager Erik ten Hag last season. He played for Borussia Dortmund for half-a-season on loan, but failed to stick.
Italian giants Juventus reportedly have interest in both Sterling and Sancho, but United and Chelsea appear to be engaged in more serious talks.
