Wang Xinyu of China defeated Arina Rodionova of Australia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of women's singles action at the U.S. Open on Tuesday, advancing to the second round for the second straight year.
Wang allowed two breaks by her opponent in the first set and dropped the frame in nine games. Rodionova converted another break point in the fifth game of the second set, but Wang immediately returned the favor, and then picked up another break in the 10th game to claim the set and level the match at 1-1.
Wang's form continued to improve in the third set, while Rodionova appeared to struggle with her stamina, as the 22-year-old from China built a 4-0 lead. The pair took turns converting breaks in the next two games, before Wang held serve in the seventh game to seal the deal.
The other three Chinese players who competed at the U.S. Open on Tuesday saw their trips to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center end in the first round.
Wang Qiang lost to 16th-seeded Liudmila Samsonova of Russia 6-2, 7-5. Wang had a chance to win the second set while leading 5-3, but wasted the opportunity by surrendering four straight games.
Zhang Shuai saw her singles losing streak grow to 23 matches after she was knocked out by the USA's Ashlyn Krueger 0-6, 6-1, 7-5. It was Krueger's first win of her career at a Grand Slam tournament.
Zheng Saisai was also eliminated after losing to Jessika Ponchet of France 6-4, 6-1.
