The San Francisco 49ers have reached a four-year, $120 million contract extension with their wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, according to ESPN on Thursday.

It's hard to say either Aiyuk or the 49ers were the winner of the long, rough negotiation. Aiyuk skipped the team's training camp and practice, even after the team announced him healthy for Wednesday's practice. Both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch expected him to join the rest of the team.

On the other hand, the deal Aiyuk agreed is the same one offered by the 49ers since August 12. It still makes him one of the best-paid in the wide receiver position, but falls behind what CeeDee Lamb signed with the Dallas Cowboys ($136 million over four years) and Justin Jefferson's deal with the Minnesota Vikings ($140 million for four years).

Aiyuk is in the final year of his five-year rookie contract. He was drafted by the 49ers with the No. 25 pick in 2020 and, since then, has caught 269 of the 399 passes targeted at him for 3,931 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns. He was selected into the Second-team All-Pro last season.

"We fully intend on Brandon being a Niner moving forward," Lynch said back in July. "We're always open to listen to things but like I said, we expect Brandon to be an integral part of our team like he has been and excited about that."

The 49ers finished the 2023 regular season with 12 wins and made the playoffs for the third straight season. They advanced to Super Bowl LVIII, but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
