China's Zhang Shuai (L) and Kristina Mladenovic of France react after winning their women's doubles second round match of the US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, US, August 31, 2024. /CFP
Experiencing a losing streak of 23 matches in singles competition is undoubtedly a tough pill to swallow, a feeling that only Zhang Shuai truly understands. Nevertheless, never-giving-up has always been the most prominent trait of the Chinese veteran. Despite facing repeated setbacks in singles matches, the 35-year-old's fighting spirit remains unwavering, and she has found success in the doubles arena with a much-needed winning streak.
Teaming up with Kristina Mladenovic from France, Zhang has advanced to the third round of the women's doubles at the US Open by defeating Poland's Magda Linette and American Peyton Stearns. The seasoned duo showcase their prowess by breaking three times in the first set to claim it 6-2. After dropping the second set 6-4, Zhang and Mladenovic took a more aggressive approach in the decisive set, quickly building a 5-1 lead and eventually securing it 6-3.
Although she faced an early exit in the singles competition at the US Open, breaking the record for the longest losing streak in women's singles tennis, Zhang insisted that this setback does not shake her belief in climbing back from the bottom. Her resilient performance in the doubles matches serves as a testament to this.

"I firmly believe that everything is not over. Through recent matches, my gains and confidence far outweigh setbacks," said Zhang. "Adversity will always be the cornerstone of our journey in life. Failure divides people into different categories. I have stood at the bottom before. The scenery along the way up is far more colorful than what is visible from the mountaintop."
Zhang made a remarkable breakthrough at the Australian Open in 2016, stunning the former world number one Simona Halep and reaching the quarterfinals in the women's singles. Today, her ranking has dropped to 643rd in the world. However, Zhang expressed that her love for tennis will continue to drive her forward.
"I love the process and crisp sound of hitting the ball, the joy of approaching victory through hard work, the courage to bounce back stronger from setbacks deep in my heart after defeat, the applause and cheers from the crowd when winning a point," she added.
"I love everything that tennis has given me."
