China has launched a key open laboratory aimed at advancing the energy sector by integrating meteorological research into energy exploration and development.
The lab was established through a collaboration between the China Meteorological Administration's Public Meteorological Service Center, China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The new lab marks a significant step in developing a modern electric power system in China, leveraging the critical link between weather conditions and the energy sector, said Shu Yinbiao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of the lab's academic committee, as reported by China Science Daily.
Lab director Shen Yanbo emphasized the vital role meteorology plays in renewable energy industries, such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power, which are heavily affected by weather and climate patterns.
The lab's research will focus on new energy systems and technologies, including wind and solar energy forecasting, meteorological disaster warnings, artificial intelligence applications, offshore wind power, and the smart operation and maintenance of the renewable energy sector.
