The city of Sanming in Fujian Province is one of the few places in China where traditional movable type printing is still in use. Some 400,000 movable type characters have been preserved in the city's Ninghua County, a historic settlement of the Hakka people where genealogical printing has a long tradition. Although most of the craftsmen left after the advent of modern printing, some decided to stay in the business. Now, the traditional technique has been listed as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in Fujian and is experiencing a revival after locals turned to the online market for more customized needs.
