China is ready to work with Togo to further enhance political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, water conservancy and connectivity, deepen multilateral collaboration, and promote regional solidarity and stability, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday.

Xi made the remarks while meeting with Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe, who is in Beijing for the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

The two leaders jointly announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership during the meeting.

Appreciating Gnassingbe's long-term contributions to the development of China-Togo relations and building the FOCAC mechanism, Xi said the Chinese side firmly supports Africa's integration process.

Speaking of FOCAC, Xi said the 2024 summit will map out a new blueprint for China-Africa cooperation and mark a milestone in the history of China-Africa relations.

He said China is willing to work closely with Togo to ensure the summit's success.

Noting that China-Togo relations have demonstrated resilience and vitality in the new era, Xi said the two sides always uphold mutual support on issues involving each other's core interests and major concerns.

The friendship between the two countries has grown stronger over time with unbreakable mutual trust, setting a good example of sincerity, friendship, unity and cooperation between countries, he said.

Gnassingbe said China's support and cooperation are crucial for Africa's security and development in a world facing increasing risks and threats.

Friendly exchanges and cooperation with China have significantly promoted Togo's capacity building and national development, and Togo looks forward to strengthening cooperation with China in areas such as infrastructure, science, technology and the digital economy, he said.

Gnassingbe expressed confidence that the upcoming summit will inject new impetus into Africa-China cooperation.

He said the Togolese side firmly adheres to the one-China policy and supports China in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
