Where Nature Meets Culture: From fruit peel to medicinal ingredient

CGTN

The practice of using citrus peels, or chenpi, in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has lasted for 700 years. Chenpi is a common ingredient in TCM because it is believed to fortify the spleen, eliminate dampness, improve abdominal distension, enhance digestion and reduce phlegm.

Located in Xinhui Distinct, Jiangmen City, south China's Guangdong Province, the ancient Tianma Village hosts the optimal climate for growing mandarin oranges. Unique local conditions nourish the plump mandarin with a distinctive fragrance. Different from its kin with juicy pulp, the local mandarin orange is cherished for its sweet peels, which sold well across the country as early as in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

The processing technique of the Xinhui dried orange peel was included on the fifth representative list of state-level intangible cultural heritage items in 2021.
