Eight bodies have been pulled from the wreckage and 28 people were injured after a three-story building collapsed in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state in India, local media reported on Sunday.
The commercial building, which housed multiple small companies – including a warehouse and a vehicle workshop – collapsed on Saturday afternoon.
It is unclear if there are others still trapped under the debris. The cause of the collapse is not yet known, but building and construction accidents are common during India's June-September monsoon season, with old and dilapidated structures often buckling under continuous rain.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called the deaths "heartbreaking" in a statement and offered his condolences to the grieving families.
