China's old-age dependency ratio has increased over recent years, reaching 22.5 percent in 2023, due to high life expectancy and a low birth rate.
China's average life expectancy rose to 78.6 years in 2023, according to China's National Health Commission. The country's birth rate dropped to 6.39 births per 1,000 people in 2023.
