Tianmen sugar figurine – a national intangible cultural heritage item in China from the country's central Hubei Province – traces its origins back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). What makes this art truly unique is its seamless combination of "blowing" and "molding" techniques, resulting in vibrant, lifelike creations. Given that the sugar solidifies faster in colder temperatures, artisans must work with swift, skilled hands and maintain a steady breath. At an intangible cultural heritage exhibition, Tianmen sugar figurine inheritor Fan Yaotang collaborated with a visitor to craft a sugar figurine, demonstrating the delicate balance between tradition and technique.
