The people's congress system is the fundamental political system in China. At the pinnacle of the system sits the National People's Congress (NPC), which is the supreme organ of state power.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the NPC. On September 15, 1954, the first session of the first NPC was held in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, has stressed the importance of upholding and improving the people's congress system and ensuring the people run the country.
