The China Open, the 27th tournament on the 2024 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour's schedule, got underway in Changzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, on Tuesday. Home players Shi Yuqi, Wang Zhiyi, Liang Weikeng, Wang Chang, Li Wenmei and Zhang Shuxian all secured victories in their opening matches.
Shi beat Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 21-10, 21-19 in the first round of men's singles action. The win was the World No. 1's seventh from seven head-to-head meetings. He showed remarkable dominance by starting the first game with a 10-0 run before claiming the frame by a margin of 11 points.
The second game was much closer and saw the two opponents knotted at 19-19 in the closing stages. Shi then pulled away with a pair of dynamic attacks that netted back-to-back points to close out the contest.
"I appreciate the support I received playing at home, not only from the spectators inside the arena, but also from audience watching on TV," Shi said after the match. He will face Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia on Thursday.
Wang Zhiyi knocked out Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 21-14, 21-12 in the first round of the women's singles competition.
In the men's doubles bracket, Liang and Wang Chang defeated Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov of France 22-20, 21-16 in the first round. The Chinese pair will take on Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Daniel Marthin of Indonesia for spot in the quarterfinals.
Li and Zhang won in the women's doubles first round after beating Chang Ching-hui and Yang Ching-tun of Chinese Taipei 21-17, 21-9. Their next opponents will be Kong Hee-yong and Kim So-yeong of South Korea.
