A Chinese spokesperson on Thursday urged the United States to immediately stop arming China's Taiwan region and sending erroneous signals to separatist forces advocating for "Taiwan independence."
In response to a query concerning recent U.S. plans to sell arms to Taiwan, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, urged the United States to honor its commitment of not supporting "Taiwan independence" with concrete actions.
The United States has repeatedly sold arms to China's Taiwan region, seriously violating the three China-U.S. joint communiques, especially the August 17 Communique, Chen said, adding that such an act seriously infringes China's sovereignty and security interests.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has expressed its firm opposition and announced sanctions on nine U.S. military industrial companies, he said.
"We urge the U.S. side to immediately stop arming China's Taiwan region and sending erroneous signals to separatist forces advocating for 'Taiwan independence,' and honor its commitment of not supporting 'Taiwan independence' with concrete actions," said Chen.
The Taiwan authorities, led by Lai Ching-te, have constantly escalated confrontation and hostility across the Taiwan Straits, he said, adding that the military buildup of the Taiwan authorities will only lead to their own destruction.
Chen said China has full confidence and sufficient capabilities to smash "Taiwan independence" provocations and external interference.
