Shanghai Port's Wu Lei scores brace, earns CSL season record 31st goal

Sports Scene

Chinese Super League leaders Shanghai Port beat Changchun Yatai 4-3 on Saturday, with striker Wu Lei scoring twice including the game-winner, to reach 31 goals and break Eran Zahavi's record for most CSL goals in a single season.

Stoppila Sunzu's own goal and Gustavo Henrique da Silva Sousa's header gave Shanghai a quick 2-0 lead after 10 minutes.

Robert Beric pulled one back for Changchun in the 16th minute through a powerful long-range shot.

Wu scored his 30th goal of the season in the 29th minute on a follow-up effort. That strike saw him surpass former Guangzhou City (then known as R&F) striker Zahavi, who scored 29 goals in 2019, for the most in a single Chinese Super League campaign and Port led 3-1 at halftime.

Yatai's former China international Tan Long contributed two goals within six minutes at the beginning of the second half to tie the game at 3-3.

But in the 84th minute, Wu completed the scoring in the seven-goal thriller with a close range header. His record-extending 31st goal of the 2024 season sealed Shanghai's 4-3 win.

With four rounds remaining, first-placed Port are two points ahead of city rivals Shanghai Shenhua, who bounced back to edge Tianjin Jinmen Tiger 2-1.
