China opposes any violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and security, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks when asked to comment on Israel's large-scale airstrikes on Lebanon, which resulted in approximately 2,000 casualties, including women and children. 

Lin said that China is highly concerned about these incidents and shocked by the heavy civilian casualties caused by the military actions. China firmly opposes any actions that infringe on Lebanon's sovereignty and security and strongly condemns all attacks that harm innocent civilians, he added. 

China calls on all parties to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation, prevent further deterioration of regional tensions and safeguard peace, stability and the safety of people in the Middle East, he said.
