Google has unveiled an innovative AI assistant within a smartphone app for Volkswagen drivers as part of its strategy to enhance enterprise AI applications. This tool allows users to ask questions like "How do I change a flat tire?" or use their phone cameras to gain insights directly from their vehicle's dashboard.

The assistant is powered by Google's Gemini large language models, which can comprehend and generate human language responses. It was designed by incorporating data from Volkswagen's owner manuals and instructional YouTube videos on vehicle maintenance, all supported by Google's cloud computing capabilities.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasized the project's complexity, noting that integrating various data types, such as text, images and videos, presents big technical challenges.

The assistant will be available to about 120,000 owners of the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models, with plans to expand the service to additional vehicles from the 2020 model year and later by early next year. This move could significantly impact the cloud computing market, where Google currently holds the third position behind Amazon and Microsoft.

Cloud computing is a crucial area for Google, contributing $33 billion to its total revenue of $307 billion in 2023. Although AI solutions have significantly boosted revenue, the company has not shared specific figures. Additionally, Volkswagen has not disclosed details regarding the usage of the assistant.
