Chinese swimmer Sun Jiajun set a new Asian record in the 50 meters butterfly final at China's National Swimming Championships in Wuhan on Wednesday.
The Paris Olympics relay gold medalist eased to the final stage winning the heats and semifinal stages, breaking the national record twice.
In the final, the 24-year-old covered the entire length without coming up for breath and touched the wall first in 21.96 seconds, 0.01 seconds faster than his semifinal result.
The event is also serving qualifying for the year-ending short course world championships in Budapest.
"I knew I could do well after I broke the national record yesterday. I pushed myself to the extreme yesterday and today I did improve a little bit more, but I think it's only a matter of how long I can keep this up for," Sun said.
In the women's 100m breaststroke, Shanghai's Tang Qianting dominated the semifinal and advanced to the final in first place with a time of 1 minute, 2.66 seconds, setting a new Asian record also. Tang's time was also only 0.3 seconds away from the world record.
And in the women's 50m butterfly final, Zhang Yufei won in 25.16 seconds, despite taking a rest from training after the Olympics. She also won the mixed 50m medley relay later on Wednesday.
