China will continue to support Cyprus in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during talks with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

Wang said China appreciates Cyprus for adhering to the one-China principle and supporting China in realizing its national reunification.

China and Cyprus should work together to uphold the international system with the UN at its core, closely coordinate and cooperate on multilateral occasions, and safeguard multilateralism and international fairness and justice, he said.

For his part, Christodoulides said that Cyprus is committed to deepening cooperation with China and firmly upholds the one-China policy.

The world today is full of challenges, and the best way to deal with it is to uphold multilateralism and abide by international regulations, he said.

Strengthening cooperation between Europe and China is in the interest of both sides, he said, expressing the belief that both sides can properly handle trade frictions through dialogue.
