Years ago, the tomb of Ya Zhang, a distinguished military general of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC), was unearthed. Over 200 bronze artifacts were found, including the only ox-shaped bronze vessel ever discovered at Yinxu, located in Anyang, central China's Henan Province.
The vessel vividly captures the strength of an adult buffalo. Its muscular body and robust build are striking. On its neck and the inner wall of the lid, the inscription "Ya Zhang" is clearly visible. The rounded belly and short, thick legs contribute to its powerful stance, while its surface is intricately adorned with patterns of dragons, tigers, birds and fish.
Experts believe that the wild and untamed nature of these animals sparked awe and reverence among people, inspiring them to replicate and even worship these creatures in their art and rituals.
