Baked naan is a daily necessity for people of the ethnic groups in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In Urumqi, shops making and selling naan can be easily found. But this staple food is not common for tourists from other parts of China, especially from the country's eastern regions.
Ahead of China's National Day holiday, many tourists were drawn to the stalls near the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar in Urumqi and bought naan to taste.
Also known as Uygur flatbread, naan is one of the most beloved snacks in Xinjiang and has a long history. A dozen years ago, almost every family had a naan stove. These days, making naan has turned into a huge industry. Naan has become an export item and increased incomes for locals in the region.
