BYD has informed the Chinese regulator that it is recalling nearly 97,000 electric vehicles (EVs) due to a manufacturing issue involving the steering control unit, which could lead to fire risks, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
The recall affects the Dolphin and Yuan Plus models produced between November 2022 and December 2023, the SAMR said.
The two models were BYD's best-selling cars in 2023, making up 26 percent of the company's total sales of around 3 million units for the year, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows.
While BYD has quickly risen to become the world's largest seller of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, recalls of its models remain relatively rare. In 2022, the company recalled a small batch of Tang plug-in hybrids over battery pack defects that posed a fire hazard.
BYD has not yet responded to requests for comment. However, according to the SAMR, the company will ask its authorized dealers to install a "physical fix" on the recalled cars.
It remains unclear if any of the recalled vehicles were exported.
