Zhang Shuai of China defeated Greet Minnen of Belgium 6-2, 6-3 in the women's singles third-round match at the China Open in Beijing on Sunday, advancing to the round of 16 at the tournament for the fourth time in her career.
After both players held their first two serves, Zhang made her move by scoring two straight breaks, leading 5-2 in the first set. She then began the eighth game with two aces. Though Minnen launched a counter strike to try and keep the game alive, she was unable to stop Zhang from claiming the first set .
Both sides showed more aggression in the second set. Zhang broke Minnen's first serve game, but the Belgian immediately returned the favor to tie the set 1-1. Zhang then converted another break point to hold a lead of 3-1, but her advantage was soon wiped after the opponent reciprocated in the following two games.

Zhang scored another break in Game 7 and saved multiple break points in the eighth to lead 5-3. She then earned three break points in the decisive ninth game. Minnen saved the first one, but lost both the set and the match on a return ace by Zhang.
The last time Zhang appeared in round of 16 at the China Open was in 2018. Sunday's victory also gave the 35-year-old veteran her first three-match winning streak in 603 days She will next face No. 23 seed, Magdalena Frech of Poland.
Second-seeded Jessica Pegula of the U.S. beat No. 32 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 6(9)-7(11), 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday. She will face No. 15 seed, Paula Badosa of Spain, in the round of 16.
Fourth-seeded Coco Gauff also knocked out No. 24 seed, Katie Boulter of Britain, 7-5, 6-2 to progress at the Open.
