Shigeru Ishiba became Japan's prime minister on Tuesday as the country's parliament, where his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has a majority, elected him in a televised vote.

He replaces Fumio Kishida, who resigned with his cabinet on Tuesday morning amid mounting criticism over the LDP's slush fund scandal and diving public approval ratings.

Ishiba is expected to hold a late press conference on Tuesday after the emperor formally appoints him, and his cabinet, in a ceremony at Tokyo's Imperial Palace.
