Only the toughest trees survive in the desert. In the Ejina Banner of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Euphrates poplar stands out for its ability to withstand droughts.
The species has a long history of growing in the area. The vast forests and the breathtaking scenery have also attracted many visitors especially in the autumn when the leaves turn golden.
To the south of the forest lies the Badain Jaran Desert, the third largest desert in China, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, India, on July 26 this year.
