"The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death," the latest directorial work by Chen Kaige, is now topping the holiday box office charts with earnings exceeding 600 million yuan ($85 million), followed by director Lu Chuan's big-budget sci-fi thriller "Bureau 749," amassing over 300 million yuan ($46 million) despite divided opinions with some having praised the film's visual effects, while others criticized its plot holes.

Ranked third in box office earnings is the crime drama "Tiger Wolf Rabbit," which has grossed over 260 million yuan ($37 million).

About 10 movies were recently released, competing for audiences during China's National Day holiday, one of the year's most profitable box office seasons. These films cover a wide range of themes, from sci-fi and anti-child trafficking dramas to patriotism and traditional Chinese dance culture.
