Bridging cultures: The path to strengthening China and Bosnia and Herzegovina's ties

Editor's note: Chinese President Xi Jinping once remarked, "Without full confidence in our culture, without a rich and prosperous culture, the Chinese nation will not be able to rejuvenate itself." As China forges a new path of modernization, its ancient heritage is being revitalized in the new era. Recognizing the importance of cultural exchange, CGTN's Decision Makers column introduces the series "Bridging the world, boosting cultures," inviting ambassadors to share their insights on China, its civilization, and cultural communication. Sinisa Berjan is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the People's Republic of China. This is the second article in the series. The article reflects the author's opinions and not necessarily the views of CGTN.

In today's interconnected world, cultural exchange is no longer a luxury – it is a necessity. As Chinese President Xi Jinping has consistently highlighted, cultural communication is essential for strengthening ties, promoting mutual understanding, and fostering global peace and cooperation. For nations like Bosnia and Herzegovina and China, both with rich cultural histories and traditions, these exchanges go beyond diplomacy and economics. They serve as bridges that connect people on a deeper, more personal level, fostering long-lasting bonds of friendship and shared understanding.

Cultural exchange creates bridges that transcend borders, politics and even time. As the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to China, I have been privileged to witness first-hand how the cultural dialogue between our nations serves as a powerful tool for fostering mutual respect and understanding. This dialogue allows us to appreciate not only the rich histories that define both China and Bosnia and Herzegovina but also our shared values of respect for tradition, peace and human dignity.

China, an ancient civilization, has made tremendous contributions to the development of mankind, and remarkably preserved its identity and culture through over 5,000 years of history, despite all difficulties and challenges. China's cultural philosophy, steeped in Confucianism, emphasizes harmony, family and respect for history, resonating deeply with the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. My country, with its unique cultural landscape shaped by Eastern and Western influences, embraces similar values. Our history is one of coexistence and mutual respect – qualities that are crucial in today's complex world.

Through numerous cultural exchanges – whether through art exhibitions, academic collaborations or student exchanges – I have seen the transformative power of these interactions. One particularly memorable event was a joint cultural performance held in Sarajevo, where Bosnian and Chinese dancers showcased traditional dances from both cultures. The graceful movements of our Kolo dance were beautifully complemented by the elegance of Chinese folk dances. Through these performances, the dancers communicated themes of tradition, history and shared humanity. In that moment, it became clear to me that cultural exchange is not just a diplomatic exercise, but a deeply personal and emotional experience that connects people on a profound level.

But culture is not only shared through dance. Education plays a vital role in strengthening and deepening the ties between Bosnia and Herzegovina and China. Over the years, student exchange programs and academic collaborations have flourished between our nations, creating a solid foundation for mutual understanding and cooperation. These exchanges are not just opportunities for academic learning but are transformative experiences that allow students to immerse themselves in each other's cultures, languages and traditions. By studying abroad, Bosnian and Chinese students become cultural ambassadors, carrying with them not only knowledge but also a deeper appreciation for one another's ways of life. Upon returning home, these students often share their experiences, contributing to a more informed and empathetic society. These educational exchanges foster a new generation of leaders, scholars and professionals who will continue to nurture the friendship between our two countries for years to come.

Culinary exchanges are another simple yet powerful way in which our cultures interact. The sharing of food is universal, and through our respective cuisines, we tell the story of our nations. I remember my first experience with Chinese cuisine during a trip to Beijing. I was invited to a traditional Chinese dinner, and the variety of dishes, flavors and aromas was both overwhelming and exciting. One dish that stood out was "songshu guiyu" (Squirrel Fish), a beautifully presented dish shaped like a squirrel, with its crispy golden skin, and sweet and sour sauce. Another one was traditional and authentic "mapo doufu" (Mapo Tofu). The combination of flavors was unlike anything I had ever tasted before, and it left a lasting impression on me. This experience was more than just trying new food. It was a window into the rich cultural history of China, where every meal is imbued with meaning and tradition.

Similarly, I have had the pleasure of introducing Bosnian dishes such as "cevapi" and "burek" to my Chinese friends, who were eager to learn about the flavors and techniques that define our culinary heritage. Just as China's diverse regions and cultures are reflected in its cuisine, Bosnia and Herzegovina's dishes tell the story of our own history and people. These shared meals, whether enjoyed in a bustling Beijing restaurant or a cozy cevabdzinica in Banja Luka or Sarajevo, create lasting bonds of friendship and understanding. Through food, we break down barriers, learn about each other's cultures and create memories that transcend borders.

In recent years, the Belt and Road Initiative has played a significant role in promoting not only economic cooperation but also cultural exchange between our nations. Through this initiative, we have seen an increase in people-to-people exchanges, whether through business, tourism or academic programs. The opportunities for cultural dialogue have multiplied, allowing both nations to learn from one another and build lasting relationships.

The importance of cultural communication cannot be overstated, especially as we navigate the challenges of the 21st century. In a world increasingly marked by division, misunderstanding and conflict, cultural exchange offers a path to unity, cooperation and peace. It allows us to see beyond our differences and recognize our shared humanity.

As we look to the future, I am confident that the cultural ties between Bosnia and Herzegovina and China will only continue to strengthen. Through ongoing dialogue, mutual respect and a deep appreciation for each other's cultures, we are building a foundation for lasting friendship and cooperation.

Cultural communication is the key to a brighter, more harmonious future. It is not merely a tool of diplomacy, but the essence of how we, as human beings, connect with one another. I remain committed to fostering this connection between Bosnia and Herzegovina and China, and I look forward to seeing how our shared cultural journey will continue to unfold in the years to come.
