China strongly condemns and opposes U.S. arms sales to the Taiwan region and urges the U.S. to revoke the decision, Chinese Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Wu Qian said on Wednesday.
Wu made the remarks in response to a media query about a recent U.S. decision to provide military assistance worth around $567 million to China's Taiwan region.
He urged the U.S. side to stop the practice and not disturb and undermine the relations between the two countries and militaries.
The U.S.'s move seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, particularly the August 17 communique, as well as China's sovereignty and security interests, he said, adding that the decision seriously undermines China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and sends a serious and erroneous signal to the separatist forces seeking "Taiwan independence."
The spokesperson also asked the U.S. to stop its "two-faced" approach toward China, change its double-dealing practice on the Taiwan question, and cease arming Taiwan.
It must be noted that "Taiwan independence" means war, and tactics to use Taiwan to contain China will only lead to self-inflicted harm, Wu said.
