Xiamen is home to many "qilou" buildings, which are narrow townhouses that have storefronts on the ground floor. The shops are set back in the building, leaving a covered corridor for pedestrians to shelter from the wind and rain. You'll often see locals gathering under their roofs to chat and drink tea. And while the houses may not look very spacious, they're surprisingly deep, with plenty of room for the residents upstairs.
