China has slammed the Taiwan regional leader, Lai Ching-te, for his speech promoting the idea of so-called "Taiwan independence." The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Lai's speech deliberately severed the historical ties between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. It also accused Lai of provoking confrontation for personal political gain.
