Devastating wildfires have ravaged Sao Paulo's nature reserves in Brazil, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. As of October 9, over 9,700 hectares have been consumed by the flames, according to official reports.
The fires have had a catastrophic impact on the region's wildlife, forcing many animals to leave their homes. Injured and displaced creatures have been brought to rehabilitation centers, such as the Sao Bento Mountain Recovery Center, one of the 26 centers in the area.
Staff at Sao Bento have been overwhelmed by the influx of animals. Between August 24 and October 8, the center received an unprecedented 31 fire-affected animals. Many arrived in critical condition, suffering from severe burns, dehydration and malnutrition.
To aid their recovery, specialists develop tailored rehabilitation plans focused on restoring strength and weight. The process is delicate, as each species has specific needs. Experts carefully select release sites based on the animals' habits and the suitability of the environment.
As the threat of wildfires persists, the Sao Paulo state government urges citizens to report any sightings of injured wildlife to local fire and environmental authorities.
