In northern Gaza, Saber Dawas, a dedicated carpenter, is taking matters into his own hands to address the urgent need for footwear among Gaza's children. With his family of six struggling to find shoes amid escalating conflict and rising prices, Dawas has witnessed firsthand the challenges families face in his community.
Because of the conflict, Gaza is deprived of many essential goods, including shoes. As a result, many families are unable to afford even the most basic necessities.
"As you can see, diseases are rampant here, and the children are barefoot. They could get injured," Dawas explained.
Dawas began using his carpentry skills to craft wooden shoes. Sourcing wood from tents and borrowing tools from neighbors, he started producing shoes not only for his family but also with hopes of selling them at affordable prices in the future.
"The wooden shoes will at least give children something to wear," he said.
