Chart of the Day: China's progress on poverty alleviation

October 17 marks China's National Poverty Relief Day, also the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a day dedicated to raising awareness of poverty eradication.

Through continuous efforts, the final 98.99 million impoverished rural residents were lifted out of poverty, and all 832 impoverished counties and 128,000 villages were removed from the poverty list by the end of 2020.

The per capita disposable income of rural residents in poverty-stricken areas in China increased steadily. In 2023, the figure reached 16,396 yuan ($2,302), nearly tripled that of in 2013.

"Following the victory in the final battle against extreme poverty, China will continue to consolidate the results of poverty elimination, dovetail new measures with rural revitalization, and shift its focus in work related to agriculture, rural areas and rural people," according to the white paper "Poverty Alleviation: China's Experience and Contribution."

China aims to make decisive progress in rural revitalization and basically achieve modernization of agriculture and rural areas by 2035. Recent years have seen solid progress in China's pursuit of rural vitalization. Below are some of the details of China's continued efforts in this area in 2023.
