Yuan Yue reaches second round at Ningbo Open, Wang Xiyu eliminated

Home player Yuan Yue has advanced to the women's singles second round at the Ningbo Open in Ningbo, east China's Zhejiang Province, after defeating Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia 6-4, 6-2 in the resumed match on Wednesday.

The competition was scheduled to happen on Tuesday when Yuan clinched the first set, but it was paused due to heavy rain. The first set was close during most time after the two exchanged breaks in the first two games and then held all of their following three services. Yuan converted a decisive break point in the 10th to take this set and led 1-0 in the match.

Yuan began the second set with an early lead of 2-0 after breaking Tomljanovicin the second game. Though the Australian scored a break with a love game in the third, she was broken again in the fourth. Both missed a series of break points in Game 6 and Game 7 and the set reached 5-2 for Yuan to lead. She then delivered a love game to end the set and win the match.

Yuan will face No. 7 seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia in the second round.

Chinese player Wang Xiyu finished the Ningbo Open in the second round after she was knocked out by eighth-seeded Paula Badosa of Spain 6(4)-7, 6-1, 6-2. Wang took the first set to end her eight-tiebreak losing streak, but Badosa started the second set with fierce counterstrike and a quick 6-1 win.

The Spanish seed's sharp performance continued in the third set, breaking two of the opponent's first three service games and leading 4-2. Wang wasted multiple break points in Game 7 and then failed to hold her fourth serve game, losing the match.
