Anna Kalinskaya secured a straight-sets victory over home favorite Yue Yuan to advance to the quarterfinals of the WTA Ningbo Open on Thursday.
Kalinskaya was eliminated in the round of 32 at the Wuhan Open last week, but came back stronger in her next tournament in China, as the world number 12 asserted herself right from the beginning. The Russian broke the Chinese in the ninth game after an unforced error, and then won the first set 6-3.
The 25-year-old Kalinskaya continued to dominate the second as she looked to put the game to bed. Since reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open in January this year, she continues to prove herself a rising star on the WTA tour.
Yuan, who just turned 26, showed some resistance, but it was not enough to compete with the better player on the day and Kalinskaya wrapped up the second set 6-3 after another unforced error from Yuan. Next for the Russian is Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals.
