The documentary "The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru," produced and directed by Fang Li, is in the running for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The film brings to light a little-known but shocking historical event. Since its release on September 6th, the movie has received widespread acclaim in China, scoring a high 9.3 rating on Douban–a top platform for movie reviews in China–and earning over $5.9 million at the domestic box office, which is rare for a documentary.
