Originally known as BRIC, the intergovernmental organization was formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China. In December 2010, South Africa joined the group, officially changing the name to BRICS. Since January 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have also joined BRICS.
