China: Museum of Nature | Underwater forest

Located in China's southernmost island province of Hainan, Lingshui Li Autonomous County boasts a pleasant climate and diverse marine resources.

After decades of conservation efforts, the once endangered and endemic Hainan Eld's deer has seen a significant increase in its population from merely 26 in the wild.

Before proper development and management, the coral reefs had been severely damaged due to illegal exploitation.

To restore the underwater ecology, local authorities have been growing and transplanting corals since 2004.

The improvement of the underwater ecosystem has attracted more marine creatures.

Down to 200 meters below the surface, marine creatures thrive by harnessing sunlight for photosynthesis, making it a vibrant "rainforest" in the sea.
