Guilin in southern China is celebrated for its beautiful scenery, often described as the "finest in the world". President Xi Jinping himself has fond memories of the city and the Lijiang River running through it. Yet, in the early years of this century, the river became seriously polluted. And so a campaign was launched to restore the environment. Quarries were closed, the discharge of sewage into the river was banned, and riverside restaurants were shut down. Today, just as President Xi envisaged, the restoration of harmony between humans and nature along the Lijiang is bringing economic rewards for the people of Guilin.
