The election chief of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Shinjiro Koizumi has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, local media reported on Monday.

Shinjiro Koizumi said he wanted to "take responsibility" for the result in the general election that saw the ruling party suffer its worst result since 2009.

The LDP and its partner Komeito hold 215 of the 465 seats in the powerful lower chamber of parliament following Sunday's election, below the 233 seats needed for a majority. The LDP alone won 191 seats, down from 247 seats prior to the election.

According to a report carried by Fuji News Network on Monday, Komeito leader Keiichi Ishii also hinted at resignation after the election drubbing.
