Nestled at the foot of the Yanshan Mountains and along the Great Wall, Yanqi Lake attracts flocks of wild geese every spring and autumn, giving the lake its name. The lake was formed by the damming of several small rivers, the most prominent of which – the Yanqi River – flows from beyond the Great Wall. Opened to tourists in 1987, Yanqi Lake was designated a national 4A scenic area in 2002. It also hosted the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2014, adding to its prestige.
