Manchester United have sacked their manager Erik ten Hag, the club announced on Monday. Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed to take over on interim basis.
"Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men's first-team manager," United said in a statement. "Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future."
Having taken over United from the 2022-23 season, Ten Hag led the "Red Devils" to 72 wins, 20 draws and 36 losses in 128 games. They were third in his first season and eighth in the second, worst in club history during the Premier League era.
United dropped to 14th in the Premier League after losing to West Ham United 2-1 on the road on October 27. They secured only three wins after nine games in the league.
Ten Hag was granted a big say in United's transfers when he arrived. The club spent over 200 million pounds (about $259.5 million) in signing players in each of the past three years.
A surprising 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final last season helped Ten Hag keep his job and sign a contract extension until summer 2026, but United's struggling performance so far this season caused the club's top office to lose their faith in the Dutchman.
Ruud van Nistelrooy played for United between 2001 and 2006, scoring 150 goals and delivering 30 assists in 219 appearances. He helped the club win on Premier League title, one FA Cup, one Football League Cup and one Community Shield championship.
