A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday that the Chinese mainland firmly opposes U.S. arms sales to China's Taiwan region.
In response to a related question at a press briefing, Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, urged the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, desist from arming Taiwan, and stop sending wrong signals to separatist forces seeking "Taiwan independence."
Zhu said separatist activities seeking "Taiwan independence" and external interventions will not stop the irreversible trend of China's reunification and will not deter the mainland's commitment to resolving the Taiwan question and achieving national reunification.
Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party's diehard stance on "Taiwan independence" and its repeated collusion with external forces are the root causes of rising tensions and instability in the Taiwan Straits, Zhu added.
The mainland has safeguarded peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, promoted exchanges and deepened cooperation among compatriots across the Taiwan Straits, Zhu said.
