Chinese tennis ace Zheng Qinwen will play her longtime rival, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, in Purple Group at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Finals that will begin in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
Zheng had a breakout year in 2024, winning the Palermo Ladies Open, the Paris Olympic Games and the Pan Pacific Open and advancing to the Australian Open final. She qualified for the WTA Finals as the No. 7 seed.
Zheng has played Sabalenka four times so far and lost all of them. Their latest meeting was in the women's singles final at the Wuhan Open when the Belarusian secured the victory 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to lift the trophy.
Zheng will play Sabalenka on Saturday.
The Purple Group also contains Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Jasmine Paolini of Italy. Zheng has lost both matches against Rybakina so far, but keeps a 3-0 record over Paolini.
Defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland is in Orange Group with Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula of the U.S. as well as Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic.
Sabalenka pocketed two Grand Slam tournaments, the Australian Open and the U.S. Open, this year. Swiatek dominated the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships title went to Krejcikova.
The top-two finishers of each group will advance to the semifinals on Novemebr 8 and the two winners will compete for the title on November 9.
