Manchester United announced on Friday that Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the club's new head coach.

The Red Devils triggered a 10-million-euro release clause in Amorim's contract with Sporting CP to bring him to the Old Trafford. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach signed a deal running through June 2027, with an option to extend the contract by another year. He will take charge on November 11, after leading Sporting CP in their final three games before the international break.

Sporting CP have won 163 of their 229 games under Amorim, who took over in March 2020. He helped the club win two Primeira Liga titles, two Taca da Liga championships and one Supertaca Candido de Oliveira trophy.

"Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football," United said in a statement. "Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club's first title in 19 years."

Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to coach United until Amorim arrives. The former United striker took over from Erik ten Hag, who was sacked following a 2-1 defeat at West Ham on October 27. That was the team's fourth loss in nine Premier League matches since the start of the 2024-25 season.

Ten Hag was appointed as United's manager in April 2022. The Red Devils finished third in the Premier League in 2022-23 and eighth in 2023-24, the club's worst showing in the Premier League era, despite lifting the EFL Cup in 2023 and FA Cup this year.

"I wish all Manchester United fans nothing but success, trophies and glory," Ten Hag in an open letter released through his agency SEG Football. "Your support and the warmth I received from everyone at the club helped me feel at home. Thank you for this chapter in my life."
