More than half of human trafficking incidents in Canada remain unsolved as the number of cases has increased since 2013, Statistics Canada reported on Friday.
A total of 58 percent of human trafficking incidents were not resolved, which may be due to several factors, including ongoing investigations, insufficient evidence to proceed, or the absence of an identified suspect, the national statistical agency noted.
According to the agency, police services reported over 4,500 incidents of human trafficking from 2013 to 2023, representing an average annual rate of 1.1 incidents per 100,000 population. Overall, there has been a general year-over-year increase, with the most significant jump occurring between 2018 and 2019.
The vast majority of victims were women and girls, with about one-quarter being children and youth under 18 years old, the agency stated.
Official statistics provide only a partial view of human trafficking in Canada due to its hidden and underreported nature, according to Statistics Canada.
